I think I’m gonna like it here!
As they say, "everything always works out in the end." And so it has for me in my little accounting class issue. After dropping the class with the crazed, paranoid, completely offensive prof, I found that one seat had opened in a Management of Effective and Ethical Organizational Behavior class with a prof deemed as "hot" by ratemyprofessors.com. Score! However, being that my accounting class was on the last day of the ability to add a class, I had to go through a whole rigamarole to get the class added because as of last wednesday, I needed instructor permission to get in. Fortunately, I was able to get into the class, but I was still a little nervous as to the degree of business monkeyness would be taking place and if I could possibly handle it.Then, as a component of the class, I had to do a management assessment exercise where I went through a simulated, compressed work day where I acted as a VP of a pharmaceutical company, had to give a presentation, go to a few meetings, work through and respond to inbox of memos, emails and faxes and all of it was on camera. It was a really interesting thought experiment but it made it *very* clear to me my feelings about corporate American and strengthened my resolve to follow my current career path. There were some snooty people at the simulation, but the people who were in my group were pretty friendly, and I ended up riding the train with one guy who gave me directions on how to get to the craft show that I attended after the simulation where I subsequently bought lots of cool stuff including some of the most perfect gifts for a select for that I've found anywhere. After all that was over, I went home and took a nap. I deserved it.
So anyway, last night was my first management class and I must say that I'm really pleased and really impressed. Granted, this course is right up my alley with lots of IO psych elements and statistics, but the professor was truly *hot* - not flaming, not physically on fire, but really enthusiastic and engaging. Last night's lecture was one of the most dynamic and interesting that I had ever attended. All in all, I'm really glad it all worked out this way.
As a side note, the prof was talking about job satisfaction and people who are really into their jobs and he made an off comment about how he doesn't go around wearing elbow patches on the weekend and making his friends call him doctor. I couldn't help but think about my future brother in law and his elbow patches. Although, for a phd in dead white guy history, I think they check your closet to see if you have enough jackets with elbow patches before they hand over the degree.
And a quick shout out to Tom's Dad, Ben, who is having a birthday today. Happy Birthday Ben!

Doomed to never take Accounting. Ever.
I am so angry I don't even know what to do with myself. I tried this evening, for the second time, to attend the ever so elusive accounting class. I had originally tried to take it over the summer only to find that to be an incredibly bad idea and to also get severely ill, forcing me to miss classes and precious study time.I'll most likely be filing a formal complaint about it, so I'm not sure if I can go into much detail on my blog, but let's just say that there are some things you don't joke about in the classroom. Especially on 9/11.

Dude. Dude - hey. There’s something wrong with your car dude.
This morning, Tom and I were walking to the train; you know how we do. After a block, we came to an intersection and heard a loud, long honk- not uncommon in the city. Usually when you hear a honk of this kind, someone is being a severe asshole. So naturally when we heard it, Tom and I looked towards the noise to see what sort of assholery was going on. We saw no such thing and the car kept honking. And it didn't stop.As it turns out, what we were seeing and hearing was a saab circa early 80's with an obvious electrical problem. It kept honking as we crossed the street and naturally, Tom and I laughed our asses off. Finally, it stopped for a little bit - only because the car had stalled out. The driver restarted the car and thus the horn. As the car putted away, the honk continued to sound. Loudly.
Hey- it still runs, right?
