Geek, Please: the iPhone

The iPhone comes out tomorrow and in usual geek style, I ache for it. However, no amount of technolust would make me buy a 1st gen apple product. Ever*. Why? Buying first gen anything, let alone a first gen apple product is a bad idea. Granted, the iPhone looks really awesome, but I'll just let the masses test it out, work the bugs out, fix all the usability issues, and get to much larger hd versions for substantially less money than what it goes for now until I buy one. Remember the iPod? It took at least 3 generations for them to get it right, 5 to get video. I own an iPod mini, a 2nd gen shuffle, and an iPod 80 gb video (5th gen) and I'm perfectly happy with those.

One of my biggest beefs with the iPhone is the method of input. From what I've seen, the built in touchpad keyboard doesn't seem too usable to me. Granted, I recently just bought my 8525 (which, if I really wanted to, I could return within my 30-day trial and get the iPhone, but I won't) that has a slide out thumboard, which I love and use extensively. I know Apple is more of an industrial design firm than anything else, but it really wouldn't be so bad if you could get a little slidey thumb board under the iPhone. It might make it a little thicker, but really, people won't mind that much. And I want 3G and wi-fi. And a removable battery. And about 10 times the hard disk. And lots of freeware. And I want to be able to unlock it and have it be about $300 cheaper. Is that so much to ask?

As a general rule, unless something is an upgrade to what I currently have that will fix a bunch of bugs, etc, I generally wait until the bleeding edge has made its cuts before I adopt any new tech. So far, it's worked out for me and we'll see in a few weeks whether or not I'll regret my decision against the iPhone.

*Okay, if I were a hojillionaire, I would totally get an iphone, but I'm only non-profit rich and will just have to wait.

Happy PRIDE!

So today I got to live out more of my Ultra Nerd fantasies and march with a marching band. But this was not just any band, mind you. This was lakeside pride - a marching band made up of members of the glbt community of Chicago (and surrounding areas). They obviously don't discriminate against straight people and in the search for volunteers, let me tag along, try to keep my left foot with the proper beat, do a little crowd control and make sure band members didn't trip on anything.

Oh yeah, and today we marched in the Chicago Pride parade - which is totally awesome. I *love* it when any large number of people come out in combined celebration / protest / public service / sparkly splendor. That and I love Drag Queens. I would've worn my 5" , pink glittered, platform heels (aka my weddin' shoes) but there was no way I was marchin' 3 miles in those so I wore my earth shoes instead. I would never cut it as a drag queen - I just can't walk that far in heels.

It was all incredibly exciting. If *some* people have their way I'll be playing in next year's parade. If I could only finish this pesky masters degree first ;)

SiCKO – go see it. Seriously.

Tom and I were fortunate enough to score (through the pusherman that is the Internet) some tickets to see a sneak preview of SiCKO at the landmark on Saturday night.

Holy Crap.

You must go see this movie. Seriously. Go see it when it comes out. Although I'm still a huge fan of "Roger and Me" I have to say that this is MM's best film so far. The most important thing to note (for all you Michael Moore haters) is that he really lets all the horrendous facts speak for themselves. Don't worry, if you weren't outraged enough before, you will be after this movie. *and* there's a guest appearance by Nixon. Oh yeah.

Please also resist the tempation to move to a more civilized country where they have public health care. I'm already brushing up on my French.

Earth to Idiot

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I don't think I need to explain to you the 87 or more different things wrong with you parking your bright orange crotch rocket in a handicapped parking spot at home depot. Furthermore, you chose to chill upon your blazingly wrong perch for all the world to see. Please, for the sake of the gene pool, move your crotch rocket and then drive it off a cliff.

xoxo,

Kristy

In Soviet Russia, State finds You!

and I can't seem to escape...

So the weirdest thing happened yesterday. Tom and I had packed our lunches and met up in Daley Plaza to have lunch and peruse the farmers market. When we got there, we noticed that a stage was set up and a very large steel drum band was playing, primarily made up of high school kids. Cool right?

image_010.jpg

Tom and I enjoyed our packed lunches while we listened to the music. Then I noticed their banner with the name of the band and FINDLAY HS in big blue letters. Then I realize that this is the same band that was at my very good friend Lesley's wedding; I had seen them before.

No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to shake off Ohio. You can take the girl out of Ohio, but you can't keep the Ohio from following her around and weirding the shit out of her.

7 Random Things

I saw this on lay-c.com and I'm tagging myself. The idea is that you blog about 7 totally random things and then tag 7 of your friends. If you want to do it, feel free to tag yourself like I did.

1. Whenever i throw away a plastic baggie or grocery bag, I always think of myself as an 80 year old woman, eating my soylant green and waxing nostalgic about a time long past when I used to just throw away plastic instead of saving up wages in order to get a scrap of it.

2. I've never been the best speller or had the best grammar, although I've been working on improving both. However, sometimes I make spelling and grammar mistakes intentionaly to see if people will say something.

3. If I could do anything with my life, I would be a perpetual student. I love learning new and varied things, although I'd probably switch between humanities and sciences every other year.

4. I always make a concerted effort to say please and thank you and to be as kind and polite as possible to people working in service jobs. I think it makes them feel appreciated (they are but noone says anything when things go well)and hopefully my thanks makes their day a little brighter.

5. I often sit on the train and make up little adventures for the people around me. I'm on the train right now and let me tell you that there are plenty of adventures.

6. I hate chic lit, sex in the city and desparate housewives, but I secretly hope that Paris Hilton is a genius.

7. I currently have three different and very good ideas for crafty enterprises and domain names and business models to go with, but I need to finish my masters before I pursue any of them.

Alright. have at it with the randomness.

Say hello to my new wordpress theme

I decided to switch things up a bit here at ole kristyland. While I loved the in-yo-face pink of the old theme, I didn't really have the resources to make it mine or to remove the highlighted map of the Philippines which only a few of you with the biggest monitors and highest resolutions saw anyway. That and I wanted a theme that supports wordpress widgets because my side bar (namely my archives) needs a little taming. I found this one and Tom made it pink for me. It's simple, pretty, pink, and widgetized. All I need :)

Vegetables are taking over

Within the last few months I've noticed this huge upsurge in people switching to vegan or vegetarian lifestyles. All of these people are doin' it. Many, vegans especially, rave about the health benefits, increased energy levels, closer to godness they get without meat products. Lots of folks say it's better for you and there are books and books and studies upon studies about how the human body and how it processes various foods and how everyone should just be vegans who eat only organic foods. And then there's the raw food movement, but that's one bandwagon I just can't get on right now. I was even vegetarian myself for awhile in highschool, but back then the options for vegetarians were pretty minimal in rural west central ohio and I ended up eating a lot of cheese, beans and rice. All vegetarians will tell you that one can only eat so much salad.

Now, I like a lot of vegetarian and vegan recipes, and I've been really inspired by all the success stories. However, I don't necessarily have the same motivation that many do when going vegan. Coming from where I do, I understand the life cycle of farm animals. Until I moved away for college, a majority of the meat that my family ate came from the purchase of a whole or half animal which we then had butchered and prepared for us by the local butcher and then filled the box freezer in the garage. I am also fully aware that not all meat comes from factory farms and not all cows eat cannibal feed. You can get, fairly easily, grass or grain fed meat that does not come from nasty factory farms, and you can even get it in the big city too. You get the picture; I'm not buddhist nor one to be campaigning for PETA anytime soon.

I still see the benefits of going veggie or vegan. I want to lose weight, have high energy levels, be focused, eat more soy, etc. Even the stereotypical lifestyle is one that I can admire - running and doing yoga daily, meditating, eating really healthy and wholesome food, living greenly and consciously, recycling, wearing unbleached cotton, and all that stuff. I'd like to do that. I want to do it. I can see myself doing it for a long time. I guess the question for me is if this is something that I have the discipline, will power and self control to do?

I'm not sure if the proximity of a whole foods has anything to do with it but I have been really interested in this super conscious healthy living stuff lately, but I'm reading mixed reviews. Does it really work or is it expectancy effect? If I drink my weight in green tea daily, will I live forever? What about omega 3 and active enzymes? I guess there's a lot that I need to figure out.
