Damn…

Surprise! I'm back in Toledo!

I had to drive back up to take care of some stuff in the toledo office... Unfortunately, I'll have to go back to Dayton. There's lots of stuff for me to do while I'm in town though.

Apparently the PRI up here is now having issues and the email server quarantine issue wasn't resolved either. In addition, we have some other issues with exchange that prevent us from starting it up the service again, so Brandon is here (thank god) to help out with that issue while I deal with the others.

As an added bonus, there were two accidents on the highway, stopping traffic (at least I wasn't in them). But wait, there's more! I get back to my office and it looks like it's been hit with a tornado, empty motherboard boxes tossed on a random pile of computers, papers laying around, etc. Don't get me wrong, a slightly messy desk is okay, but this is a bit much. Oddly enough, none of the papers askew were the two papers I needed to call the antivirus folks. Lord only knows where those are.

At least I was able to pick up Tommy before I headed to toledo. We had lunch at polleyeyes, and I got a much needed beer.

I don't know if I'm going to be able to make it through this conversion without a trip to the mental institution. It's starting to get ridiculous.

Cutover 2003: Holy fucking shit

So I stole that from the onion... believe me, it's appropriate

So the power bounced a few times in Toledo and that's when we realized that the UPS needs a new battery.... I guess it had been 3 years since it was purchased, so it was about time for a new one... and I bought one not too long after I got the news.

And now there are issues with the exchange server....

And the techs at KMC went home before we were able to port the numbers to the PRI. Thanks guys.

If I can fix a few problems, I should be able to finish most of the network stuff this weekend, but I'm still going to have to stay until Monday night, and see if we can cutover the phones then.

Jesus Tap Dancing Christ!

Ok.. I had no idea what sort of mess I had gotten myself into with this conversion... oh man..

So yesterday, NEC extended the dmark upstairs and got the PRI up. We got our DID's and were able to convert the data in the switch fairly easily.

I thought things were going well.

I even went to dinner at carrabas with the NEC folks, on their dime. Got to have some drinks, eat great food, hang out, and listen to bad jokes. It was nice. Let me tell ya, these folks are cool and really great to work with. I have no idea how they handle these high stress situations all the time. I don't want to go through this crap again for a long time (although I probably will when they move the fricken toledo office) and they do it for a living! Incredible!

So last night, the people next door (probably in town for the PE teacher convention) decided to bring their screamin' kid with them. This kid wasn't crying like normal children... it was screaming... like getting abused about ready to die screaming... If I weren't so tired from being woken up at irregular intervals throughout the night, I would've called and changed my room. But alas, I got hardly any sleep instead... and then no breakfast in the morning.

I wasn't doing all that great when I got to the office....

So we decided to cutover the network at noon, while everyone in the office was away at a luncheon of some description, so we could get a headstart on testing the VPN and setting up the connection between the PBX's. We did as instructed and switched the t1 to the router that was all setup to go by the cisco tech. Except, the config was missing. It wasn't there at all. It was like it had been wiped. After some round aboutness, I was able to get the config back on the router, but the VPN tunnel wasn't up. We ended up calling the cisco tech back in so that he could troubleshoot the vpn. I did some messing around with the pdc here and was happily setting up accounts when I was disconnected from my servers in Toledo.

The power was bouncing in Toledo, the ups battery was farked, and the exchange server won't come back up.

So now, we did have the power problems that I had predicted on wednesday ("the only other thing that could possibly go wrong now is if the power would go out!"). Way to go Kristy... fabulous...

However, the power came back on and the ups is hangin on by a thread... The VPN tunnel is up.. and they're working on the PBX connections so that we can possibly do the port on the PRI and cutover, maybe tonight. These NEC people are made of steel...

It's still going to be a long night...

Dayton, the city for me to Poop on

I'm sure you're all dying to hear about how awesome my thanksgiving trip to phoenix / vegas was... Well bite me, its been a long few days since I've been back. The trip was so incredible that I'd have to write pages and pages about it, but I'm too lazy to write about all of the good times that I had with my grandparents (Thanks Gramma and Grampa!) right now. That, and I'm in a pretty pissy mood, so I'm going to bitch.

So shut yer yapper and quit yer bitchin'. It's my turn.

So I get to Dayton and encounter a huge pile of shit that's all mine to clean up. What's wrong? Here's whats wrong (keep in mind that cutover is on friday, 2 days away):

-The PRI was installed in the basement. Most of you might not think this is so bad, but it is. Why? Because there's a fricken DMARK and an ameritech installed smart jack in the office! So that means that any normal person would put the dmark into the suite where it was requested to be installed, but no, ameritech put it down in the basement... were we have no wire...

-Somehow, we missed setting upDirect Inward Dialing. As it works now, you won't be able to call someone's desk, it'll have to go through a receptionist first. I told the NEC folks that I wanted it setup *exactly* like Toledo about 5 million times. I mean, come on... it's not like *I* know what the hell I'm doing... Fortunately there are workarounds for this..

-The T1 to the internet hasn't been installed (and when it gets installed, it'll probably go to the basement). This isn't so bad because we can use the current T1, even though it's through a different provider, everything should work ok. Hopefully. However, this makes a lot more work for me because NEC won't be working with the T1 that we're going to use, so I have to do all the work to switch it over.

-Lima and springfield still aren't wired... AND the lease for Lima hasn't been signed yet! HA! They're supposed to start moving in on the 15th. Good fricken' luck.

-They want to move the Toledo office. The expansion isn't even over, and they want to move the Toledo office... What the fuck?!?!?!? Although I like the new office building, it's unfortunate that the windows don't open because then I'd have to go all the way to the rooftop to jump, instead of from the convenience of my 12 floor office. Oh yeah, and they put the IT office and server room right next to the quiet room. Good going guys. Smart thinkin' there.

-I'm still recovering from jet lag and I was at the office 13 hours yesterday...

The good news? They found the problem with the t1 line in toledo and they think it has to do with the arial wire, line noise, and our circuit connector. However, there hasn't been any CRC's, interface resets, or carrier transitions since they started the 24 hour monitoring. If they see errors, they'll fix the issue right away (so we'd be good to go, as it doesn't take long swap out connectors). My luck, there won't be any errors tonight.

*sigh* Stay tuned for more Dayton hijinks.
