Initiated unto Christ courtesy of Johnny Cash
Today my Grandmother presented me with the most wonderful of gifts. It's an ornately carved silver bowl with handles that was given to her by a dear friend on her and my Grandfather's 25th wedding anniversary. But this bowl has more history as it was also the bowl that they used to baptise me (methodist, oddly enough). So you're like.. greak Kristy, you got a bowl from your Gramma... fabulous. But this isn't just any bowl....
This bowl is from the House of Cash.
You got it folks: I was baptised from a bowl formerly owned by Johnny Cash. No wonder his music touches my soul. Johnny and God must have some devine plan for me :)

Cut the cord
It's really hard for me to think that I'll be in Phoenix later today and in Vegas on Monday...and I'm not coming back...
for a whole week...
I'm so engrossed in my work that it's hard for me to let go. I just hope that while I'm away, I don't get a bunch of dumbasses calling on my cell phone.
VEGAS BABY! VEGAS!

There’s a party in my router tonight!
Apparently, there must be one happening party in my internet router, because EVERYONE WANTS TO GET INSIDE! I, being the virtual velvet rope, won't let them. I'm tired of letting people into my router, having them fuck everything up, and then leaving me to clean up the mess. But I've got a bunch of CRC's and interface resets on the serial interface connected to my ISP. So I give them a call, and enter myself into this power struggle over my router.
Them: Let us into your router
Me: No.
Them: We want to get in and take a look
Me: What information do you need, I can email it to you
Them: We don't even know what your problem is
Me: I told you what my problem is, I'm getting interface resets on the interface connected to you guys.
Them: Just let us in so we can take a look
Me: What do you need, and I'll send it to you?
Them: We won't do anything bad.
Me: Yeah, that's what Cisco said when I let them in and they brought down my network
Them: But it's hard for us to troubleshoot without any information. We won't make any changes to you config without your permission
Me: I sent you a show tech. What else could you possibly need to know?
Them: Well we want to turn on logging and give you some access lists.
Me: I thought you weren't going to make any changes to my config? Send me the stuff to paste into a config and I'll do it
Them: Ok Fine. We've been doing this a long time, so we have seen this stuff before. There's a trojan on your network and the folks are trying to get back into it.
Me: I took that trojan down awhile ago. Besides, we've been having these problems for two months. And I notice that I have hardly any incoming traffic that coincides with the interface resets.
So obviously, I felt like I wasn't getting very far with my ISP, so I called my transport provider. They tested my lines and connected me with the local tech, who apparently is cohoots with my ISP.
KMC tech: So I hear you won't let them into the router
Me: No, I won't
Him: Why not?
Me: I sent them a show tech. What could they possibly need to know outside of a show tech?
Him: Well, these guys are brilliant
Me: The folks at Cisco are brilliant, and they brought my network down.
Him: So, why don't you just let them in the router
Me: Because they don't need to get into the router. I can give them any information they need. They only have to tell me what information they want, and I'll email it to them. It's just like them being online, except they're getting the info through email.
Him: Would you be willing to work with them over the phone?
Me: Yes! I just am not going to let them into my router without a good reason
Him: Well they want to fix your problem
Me: I want my problem fixed too, but it doesn't require those guys to have access to my router.
So they sent the poor KMC engineer to try to convince me to let me in the router. Shortly after I got off the phone with him, I had 4 more interface resets. Surprise, Surprise. They were fuckin' with me. Pompous asshole Geeks are the bane of my existance. But then again, I probably would've done the same thing if I were them :)
I've turned logging on and they're monitoring my lines tonight. Hopefully we'll find the problem.

Queer eye for the straight girl
I love the show "queer eye for the straight guy." It's too bad they only stay in New York, though. I want them to come to BG and make me over :) If they came to make over Tom, I would get so jealous ;)I've never been much of a girly girl, although I wouldn't say I was a tomboy either. I think sports are a big component of being a tomboy, and I'm not big into those. I've always wanted to have an element of high femininity about me though. You know, makeup, hair, clothes, etc. I guess I just never had the time or money to indulge in stylish clothes, trendy makeup, and fancy hair. All that stuff is really resource intensive, and I would rather go without than with, I guess. However, wouldn't it be fun for maybe one day, to get a new outfit, hairdo, and a facial or something like that? I could get all schnazzed up and go do something "on the town." And then, I wake up and realize that Im just an average girl living in Northwest Ohio...
and it's time to get ready for work.

Sweet dreams are made of these
I'm feeling like I'm not updating my journal enough, so I figure, I could use this morning coffee time to do some of that updating. I know you all are itchin' for a little insight into my life... Gotta keep the public happy ;)Tom and I both have been incredibly overworked and stressed lately. He because he has 3, 600 level grad classes on top of a bunch of grading for his ga hours. Me because I'm dealing with this expansion at work, and it seems like little problems keep creepin' up on me. We're doin' alright, but if you see us in a grumpy mood, please understand. We talked about it last night and we both feel like we're starting to get boring to people; all we can talk about is the stuff that takes up the majority of our time, work. We're both trying very hard to get out and communicate with other people, but at least I feel that I don't have much important to say. If you wanna talk about work, I'm on it, but other than that, nothing really interesting is going on in my life (which is why I haven't been posting much). At least thanksgiving is coming soon along with much needed vacation for both of us. After that we'll be like Mr. Rogers says: "I'll be back when the day is new
And I'll have more ideas for you. And you'll have things you'll want to talk about. I will too. It's such a good feeling, a very good feeling. The feeling you know that we're friends."
So yesterday I picked up the mini-van... a Chrysler Town and Country... *sigh*
It is such a beast. I will never own a minivan, mark my words. Although it was kind of fun to pick Tommy up from school in the mini-van. All I'd need would be a "My boyfriend has a 3.75 in the CS Grad program at BGSU" sticker, and I would be set. Some folks in the apartment parking lot were snickering at my choice of vehicle. I guess minivans aren't college type cars.
Last night I had all kinds of crazy dreams. I remember one vividly:
I was in new orleans with Brandon and Tina (Brandon is the guy who used to have my job and Tina is one of the ladies I work with). We were in a liquor store in New Orleans, buying liquor (that's what one usually does in such situations). We all went to the front of the store to check out when these two multi-racial jr. high aged girls, in navy and yellow plaid catholic school uniforms, come into the liquor store and start shooting it up matrix style. I drop to the ground right beside the counter behind which the girls are standing and I see Brandon get out a gun and start to help the girls rob the liquor store. The girls, Brandon and Tina all leave with liquor and money. I get up off of the ground and go outside where a bunch of people who used to be in the store are standing (and are starting to file back into the store to loot it before the cops come). I see one of my friends from High School, Dough Thrush, and he walks over to me, very happy to see me. He had been shot in the hand, but didn't want to walk to the hospital by himself, as we were in a seedy neighborhood in New Orleans. So, I walked him to the hospital, which was about five blocks down the street. As we walked by the hospital, it looked like it was being torn down, but we found some lights on and went in anyway. Fortunately, there was an emergency room, where I helped Doug check in (he couldn't write with either of his hands for some reason).
And then I woke up and said "what the hell?"
So if you can analyze that one, best of luck to you. I'm not making much of a connection with it.

She works hard for the money…
Man... I'm up early. I like to get up in the morning a bit before I really have to, drink some coffee, and peruse through my links on a weekdaily basis. But today, I've got special things to do. As some of you know, I was in a car accident not too long ago. Some jerk who got way too excited about ESPN gameday forgot how to drive and rear ended me while I was stopped at a light on wooster street (right in front of Kohl, right as BG was crawling with people, on one of the busiest streets in town, yeah it was a good time). Fortunately for me, the guy's insurer, Nationwide, is assuming all liability and is not only fixing my car, but giving me a rental as well. I gave them this schpeal about having to use my SUV for work and wondering if I could get an SUV rental. The girl at enterprise just said "Okay, ma'am, you're now approved for a minivan!"Crap.
So I have to take my car to the shop and get my hot rod minivan to drive around this week. Fabulous.
I'm really tired and it's only Monday. I spent most of my Saturday cleaning house (thank god, it really needed it). Sunday, I got up early, had breakfast with Pete, Jay, and Tom, and headed into work. Let me tell you what, the Spitzer building is *really* fricken creepy afterhours. My hallway was dark and I had no idea where to turn the lights on. I couldn't see to unlock my door, and while I'm trying to find the key-hole, I had to be especially careful that no monsters or ghosties were on their way to eat me. As long as I'm in my office, they can't get me. If I go out into the hallway, I'm free range to all the evil monsters and ghosties of the Spitzer building.
So I battle with changing over the antivirus software from Trend Micro to the new Computer Associates eTrust 7. Hopefully, all goes well with the new software. I had some problems with licensing on the servers. Only one server would take the licensing, and the bummer about it is, the admin server stops every 30 seconds if it can't grab the licensing key. Hooray for maintenance contracts, I at least got some help, but I had to have some technician guy paged. He was working from home, so I felt kind of bad. But I bet he's getting time and a half or something nice like that, so I didn't feel so bad after awhile. The CA software came with a remote install utility, which was nice. It was supposed to uninstall the old stuff, and install the new stuff. I tried to use the Trend Micro uninstall utility, but it didn't work. Since we have an uninstall password also, the uninstall for the CA remote utility only worked on a few machines. I spent half of my time battling with the servers and half my time uninstalling the client from the machines. This brought me to the add / remove programs utility on a lot of computers, where I found many a weatherbug. GOODBYE WEATHERBUG! Keep in mind, people aren't supposed to be downloading software. Fricken' weatherbug....
I can't wait until I get my key for Systems Management Server. CDW sold it to me, sent me the media, and then told me that the part # for getting the key was discontinued until Nov 1. So I call back a little after that, saying "Hey, Where's my key?" CDW says: "Hey, screw you, you don't get no key until Dec 1." This really sucks for me mind you. I've got a lot of computers to deploy software to, but nothing to do it automatically. I'm tired of this sneakernet bullshit too.
On the bright side, I need to order a whole shload of computers today, which is always fun :) A combo of Dells and Barebones, which probably means a perusal of pricewatch and a fight with the Dell guy ("dude, you're giving me a deal, or I'll buy my 25 computers at gateway").
As much as I bitch about my job, I look back and realize how far I've come in the past 10 months, and it's hard for me to complain. I never really wanted to be a network administrator, but everything that I've done has led me into becoming one, so maybe it's my calling :) And to think, for a good portion of my life, I wanted to be a Child Psychologist. It's really strange to think that I could've been doing something completely different than what I'm doing now. I'd probably still be in school and about ready to hang myself out of the window if I had gone the psychologist route. Computers are where it's at in that respect, although I still do listen to people's problems all the time.
So it goes.

Gonna see a shooting start tonight and I’m thinking of you
Don't forget to look up tonight. Hopefully there won't be clouds like there were for the aurora borealis a week or so ago.

They’re archetypes, not characters. What would they do, raise a bunch of clichs?
Tom took me to see The Matrix: Revolutions this weekend, and I have to say that I'm kind of disappointed. The action was great, but it was getting kind of old. I would've rather had more plot and less machines, but hey, I'm not the target audience. I also could've done without the whole "wouldn't it be great to give these geeks a bible story and they wouldn't even know it" deal too. But alas, as a geek, it is something I must do. And yes, there's probably going to be another movie... and it'll probably be straight to video. Here's a good explanation of the whole deal. Warning, there are spoilers.
